Convert Addon Domain to Account

Valid for versions 82 through the latest version

Last modified: December 7, 2022

Overview

This interface allows you to convert an existing addon domain into a full cPanel account. When you convert an addon domain into a stand-alone cPanel account, you gain more control over the domains resources, such as databases, FTP accounts, and SSH access. For more information, read our Domains documentation.

Important:
  • You must have the rearrange-accts ACL to convert an addon domain into a cPanel account. For more information, read our Edit Reseller Nameservers and Privileges documentation.
  • The addon domains data remains on the source account after this process completes. Due to this, converting an addon domain to a full cPanel account requires a large amount of disk space.
    • We recommend that your server has triple the space that the new domain needs before you begin this process.
    • After the process completes, you must remove the data from the source account. This reduces your accounts data usage.
  • We strongly recommend you perform a backup of the original account that owns the addon domain before you begin the conversion.
  • You must delete the subdomains of the addon domain before you convert it to a cPanel account. If you do not perform this action, the conversion process will fail.
Note:

This interface does not display addon domains for cPanel accounts set as a linked mail node.

Select addon domain

This section of the interface lists all of the available addon domains and their owners. Enter a domain or owner in the Search text box to filter this list.

To convert an addon domain into an account, click Convert in the Action column for that domain. A new interface will appear with the following sections:

Account Settings

This section of the interface allows you to set the basic information for the account.

  • Username  The username for the account that you will create. By default, the system generates a username using the addon domain name.
  • Contact Email (optional) The main contact email address for the new account, to which the system will send notifications.
  • Package (optional) The package for the new account.
  • Preserve Account Ownership  Select this checkbox to ensure that the reseller account that owned the addon domain will also own the new account.
    Note:

This setting is only available to users with root-level privileges.

Selection Details

This section of the interface displays settings for the items that the conversion can move.

These settings allow you to copy the contents of the addon domains document root and VirtualHost include files to the new account.

  2. Select the Move custom DNS records checkbox.
    Note:

  3. Click Save Selections.
Note:
  • Each checkbox applies to all items of that type. For example, you cannot choose to copy only some of the email accounts.
  • The conversion process moves the addon domains mailing lists and Roundcube webmail data even if you do not copy any email data.
  • The addon domains new account will inherit the mailbox storage account of the original account. For example, if the parent account uses the maildir format, then the addon domains new account will use the maildir format.

MySQL Databases

This setting allows you to copy or move the addon domains MySQL® or MariaDB databases to the new account.

Note:

If you choose to Copy the MySQL databases, ensure that you have enough available disk space in the new location.

To copy the addon domains MySQL databases to the new account, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Configure in the MySQL Database section.
  2. Click Copy in the How do you want to transfer your MySQL Databases? section.
  3. Select the checkbox next to each database that you want to copy, or select the checkbox in the table heading to select them all.
    Note:

The system deselects these checkboxes by default.

  4. Enter a new name for each selected database. If prefixing is enabled on the server, the new database name will automatically begin with the username* prefix.
    • MySQL limits the database username to 16 characters. The system includes the database prefix (the first eight characters of the cPanel accounts username and an underscore (_) character) in the character count for the username. For example:
      • A MySQL database with the db* prefix allows usernames that contain up to 13 characters.
      • A MySQL database with the example* prefix allows usernames that contain up to eight characters.
    • MariaDB limits the database username to 47 characters. The system includes the database prefix (all of the cPanel accounts username and an underscore character) in the character count for the username. For example:
      • A MariaDB database with the db* prefix allows usernames that contain up to 44 characters.
      • A MariaDB database with the example* prefix allows usernames that contain up to 39 characters.
  5. Click Save Selection.

To move the addon domains MySQL databases to the new account, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Configure in the MySQL Database section.

  2. Click Move in the How do you want to transfer your MySQL Databases? section.

    Note:

When you move a database, the following permission changes will occur:

    • The addon domain owner will lose access to the database.
    • The newly-created cPanel account will gain full access to the database.

  4. Select the checkbox next to each database user that you want to move, or select the checkbox in the table heading to select them all.

    Note:

If you move a database user and not the database to which they have access, the user will lose all access to that database.
